History

The lemon-lime soda was introduced in 1929 as Bib-Label Lithiated Lemon-Lime Soda. It wasn’t until 1936 that its name was changed to just 7 Up. The creator of 7 Up, Charles Leiper Grigg, never publicly explained what “7 Up” means. Naturally, there is a lot of speculation and mystery surrounding the meaning of the name.

Did you notice the word “lithiated” in the original name? Yes, the original formula had lithium, the mood stabilizing drug, as an ingredient. Lithium wasn’t removed until the 1950’s. 7 Up is currently lithium free and marketed as containing 100% natural flavors.

7 Up has changed owners a few times over the years. It is now owned by Dr Pepper Snapple.
