Sprite was created in 1959 West Germany as a lemon flavor of Fanta. It debuted in the United States in the early 1960’s under a new name “Sprite” to revival the already successful 7 Up.
As 7-Up struggled to find its identity and competition increased, its share of the soda market greatly declined after Sprite was introduced into the United States.
By the late 1970’s Sprite took over 7 Up as the market leading lemon soda. As of 2014, Sprite held the number six position in the overall soda market. Coke held the top spot, followed by Pepsi, Diet Coke, Mountain Dew, and Dr Pepper.
Sprite: Carbonated water, high fructose corn syrup, citric acid, natural flavors, sodium citrate, sodium benzoate.
Sprite Zero: Carbonated water, citric acid, potassium citrate, natural flavors, potassium benzoate, aspartame, acesulfame potassium.
While Sprite is caffeine-free, it does contain a decent amount of calories, carbs, and sugar in its regular version. Sprite Zero is calorie-free with no sugar or carbs but it uses the artificial sweeteners aspartame and acesulame potassium for flavor. Sprite’s nutrition facts are as follows:
